The SoundConverter tool allows you to convert between different audio formats and also to compress audio with the IMA 4:1 compression standard available in QuickTime 2.0. It is a fat binary and runs native on 68000-based Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers. It requires System 7.0 or later and Sound Manager 3.0 or later.
SoundConverter can read and write AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) files, AIFC compressed files and System 7 ('snd ') sound files. It supports 8 or 16 bit uncompressed data and MACE 3:1, MACE 6:1 and IMA 4:1 compression.
USING SOUND CONVERTER
To convert a sound, you must first open a sound file. This can be done using the "Open..." item in the "File" menu in SoundConverter or by dragging an AIFF or System 7 sound file onto the SoundConverter icon. A window will then display the settings of the input file and allow you to change the output settings, as shown below:
To convert the sound to the selected output settings, choose "Save As..." from the "File" menu and select a name for the output file. Sound Converter will then begin converting the file, showing a progress bar as it goes along. You can stop the conversion at any time by clicking on the "Stop" button or by closing the window. If you choose to stop before the entire input file has been converted, the output file will be truncated.
